Founded in May 2024 by Mirwansyah ‘Bule’ of The Union Group (the Jakarta F&B industry giant behind acclaimed The Cocktail Club, Union, Loewy, and more), Modernhaus invites guests into their stylish living room, replete with warmly lit lamps, coffee tables and mixed sofa seating, a space more akin to entering a friend’s home than a traditional bar. The name Modernhaus cleverly plays on the dual meaning of ‘haus’ – both a nod to the mid-century modern architectural design of the venue and a reference to ‘thirst’ in Bahasa Indonesia – encapsulating the essence of what this bar aims to provide. With a focus on locally sourced ingredients and a commitment to achieving zero-waste, Modernhaus embraces an ingredients-first philosophy that celebrates the rich biodiversity of Indonesia.

The bar’s interior is a stunning homage to modern architectural design, featuring an open kitchen of sorts. But the focal point is a custom-made communal island bar counter that breaks the barrier between bartender and patron, enhancing the cosy, convivial atmosphere.

The cocktail menu at Modernhaus brings nature indoors, divided into four categories that make up the anatomy of a plant – roots, fruits, leaves, and flowers – with each dram crafted to showcase local botanicals. The menu incorporates fermentation techniques – like homemade makegeolli and fruit wines that employ local berries and spirits such as sopi or arrack – and sustainable practices – like upcycled ingredients – to minimize environmental impact. Signature drinks like Pohpohan, made from refined juniper mint liqueur champagne lactic, limeade cordial, and locally-sourced pohpohan leaves, offer a refreshingly vegetal experience that is undeniably Indonesian.

The bar has been recognized as one of the Top 10 Best New International Cocktail Bars by the APAC Tales of the Cocktail Spirited Awards in 2025, a testament to its thoughtful concept and execution.
